Helzberg Penguin Plaza

Helzberg Penguin Plaza at the Kansas City Zoo & Aquarium is a highly specialized exhibit that blends immersive guest experience with complex structural engineering.

Leigh + O’Kane served as the structural engineer for this unique project, supporting a design that required precision, creativity, and close collaboration across disciplines. The structure includes curved concrete beam spanning 40 feet, engineered to retain hundreds of thousands of gallons of water while maintaining the architectural vision of an open, seamless environment.

To preserve sightlines and enhance the visitor experience, structural elements such as steel columns were carefully integrated and concealed within the design. The result is a space where engineering quietly supports both animal habitats and public engagement.

Helzberg Penguin Plaza reflects the role of structural engineering in making ambitious, experience-driven environments possible.
